Still Life Drawing

Purpose:

  • To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a variety of mark-making techniques to describe form and value;
  • To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.

Artists Studied: Henry Moore, John Whalley, & Vincent van Gogh

Reflection:

I used Vincent Van Gogh’s style in my drawing.  I found it worked well for me because it gave more order to the drawing.  However, there were some areas that resembled Henry Moore more.  For example, dark parts on the tape are more his style.  The lines are not quite as straight and ordered.  Overall, the parts that use Vincent Van Gogh are most effective in representing a 3D drawing with multiple values.
I learned that you don’t need to smudge to create value and how to create different values using lines only.  Smudging makes your drawing less precise, while lines allow you to make every line meaningful.  To create a darker line with the black you can make the lines denser, as in more close together.  Also, to make a lighter line with the white you can make the lines denser.  Another way to create value is how hard you push on the charcoal.  For example, if you press down harder on the black charcoal it creates a darker line.
